Mirrored Windows- Pointillistic Impressions of Ralph P. Brown
Ralph P. Brown
Ralph P. Brown is a Mohawk Indian and acclaimed portrait artist. He was raised on the Akwesasne reservation located in New York and his artwork can be seen in art galleries and shows across the country.
Ralph P. Brown is a self-taught artist who uses a stipple style to create the pointillistic impressions of his cultural and spiritual ideas. He draws inspiration from his native culture, nature and his unique perspective on the world and his spirituality.
My talent is a gift from the Creator. My art is how I share that gift with anyone who would partake of this with me. The use of dots in my work is in honor of the Universe in which nothing is truly solid. Everything is made of up particles. I often use black and white to symbolize the duality of nature and the connection between opposites. Black and white are different aspects of the same reality - they are both "color". Some people see the opposites without recognizing the connection or how they relate to each other. Mirrored Windows hinges from this idea. It speaks to how we see - the mirror and the window related to sight, not only from the eyes but through the spirit, the mind, and the heart.

The Universe speaks to us in signs and symbols that we interpret according to our own experiences and understanding. When the leaves fall from the trees we know that summer is at its end, just as we know when the rains come that spring is on the way. Art is similar. Art is about the way we see - the window is the lens of our perception. It is colored by our experiences, beliefs and what we know and understand about the symbols we view. The mirror is what is reflected by the artist - his interpretation of things or ideas based upon his experiences, beliefs and knowledge of the things he is illustrating. Each picture will speak differently to each viewer. Everyone will take away something different since every piece of work has a message that is personal to the individual who is viewing it. This is the concept behind Mirrored Windows. |
