The Cash for Clunkers program spent $3 billion tax dollars ostensibly to save $300 million worth of gasoline, and in the meantime boost auto sales. As it turns out, Japanese auto sales.
But to me the most offensive part of this boondoggle is the deliberate destruction of the traded-in vehicles. The oil was drained out and sodium silicate solution poured in and the engines run at high speed until they seized up.
Could not these vehicles been given to charities? Could the parts not be recycled to keep other old cars on the road?
I am offended by this whole deal.
Deliberate waste and destruction appears to be official US Government policy, because they cannot think of anything else to do!
