SUB-SURFACE FIRE AT ST. LOUIS RADIATION LANDFILL

*** BREAKING NEWS *** Sunday, February 17, 2014 3:28 PM EST -- North St. Louis County residents are worried after seeing smoke rising from the Bridgeton Landfill Sunday morning, because of radioactive waste buried at the landfill. Central County Fire and Rescue says crews have responded to the scene at the landfill’s South Quarry, where they confirm a sub-surface fire is presently burning. The smoke can be seen along Boenker Lane off St. Charles Rock Road in Bridgeton. Radiation levels in the smoke . . . .
have not yet been measured. Missouri Department of Natural Resources officials have been asked to respond to the scene to monitor the situation.
UPDATE 9:03 PM EST
The fire is out. Landfill crews failed to notify police or fire departments of this fire; it was called-in by local residents instead. This was a direct breach of the established protocols for emergencies at the landfill and local officials are investigating.
Officials on scene say they have taken measurements for radiation in the air and have found NONE.
Frightened local residents, interviewed on local TV news asked "If they can't be trusted to follow procedures with something small, how can we trust them to do the right thing if radiation is involved?"
