Legal Action Leads to Whale Protections\

An NRDC lawsuit has led to a landmark agreement with the Obama Administration and the oil industry to protect marine mammals in the Gulf of Mexico from seismic airguns, which are used in oil and gas exploration. The explosive noise from high-powered airguns -- which repeat every 10 to 12 seconds -- can deafen, injure and kill whales. The agreement puts biologically important areas off-limits to airguns and expands protection for the most vulnerable whales and dolphins. You can help save beluga whales from the same deadly noise by protesting the use of airguns in Alaska's Cook Inlet.

Public Sends a Clear Message on Pebble Mine

For 60 days ending in June, the American people had a chance to weigh in on a study by the Environmental Protection Agency, which concluded that the Pebble Mine would be devastating for Bristol Bay's people and wildlife. The vast majority of public comments were adamantly opposed to the mine. Our BioGems Defenders alone sent more than 267,000 messages calling on the agency to stop the mine. Meanwhile, more than 100 jewelers have pledged their opposition to the gargantuan gold and copper operation. Read more.

Safe for Now

Last month, the San Diego Water Board denied a permit to build the first segment of a toll road that would eventually bisect one of California's most popular parks, San Onofre State Beach. NRDC has waged a decade-long fight against the plan to pave over San Onofre and destroy some of the last remaining wildlands on the southern California coast. San Onofre State Park
Virginia Activists Win One

for Forests

In April, we asked our VA activists to speak out against the possibility of fracking in the George Washington National Forest by contacting their senators. In the wake of this outcry, Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner wrote letters strongly urging the Forest Service to listen carefully to public input -- the majority of it supporting the agency's original proposal to limit fracking -- before finalizing its forest plan.
