Wood Burn Program (Utah)
Solid Fuel Burning Device Rules
Amendment to Rule 307-302
Solid Fuel Burning Devices in Box Elder, Cache, Davis, Salt Lake, Utah, Tooele Utah, and Weber Counties.
- Fact Sheet: Seasonal Wood Burn Ban
The proposed seasonal wood burn ban amendment would ban solid fuel burning in fireplaces and wood/coal stoves from November 1 to March 15, beginning in November of 2015. Homeowners whose homes are heated solely by wood and are registered with DAQ as a sole source residence would be permitted to continue heating with wood.
The Air Quality Board (AQB) is seeking public comment for this rule amendment. The 40-day comment period will run from January 1, 2015 to February 9, 2015. Public hearings will be held in Salt Lake, Provo, Davis County, Ogden, Logan, Tooele, and Brigham City. These hearings will give the public an opportunity to provide oral comments for the public record. There will not be technical presentations at these hearings, and all comments received during the comment period, whether written or oral, will be afforded the same consideration.
During public comment, the AQB will ask residents to comment on the appropriateness of a single ban period applicable in all areas, or a different ban period for each area if it results in the same air quality impact. The AQB will also seek comment on the possibility of exempting counties where data may not support a ban.
Please Note: The AQB will only consider comments that are submitted during the public comment period noted above. Please contact DAQ between these dates to ensure that your comments will be part of the public record. E-mail your written comments to Mark Berger or by standard mail to:

This amendment clarifies which solid fuel burning devices are subject to R307-302. The rule amendment, which was approved by the Air Quality Board on December 4, 2014 and becomes effective on February 2, 2015, includes the following changes to the existing rule:
- Expands the rule to include all commercial, industrial and institutional sources.
- Exempts commercial and industrial food preparation using solid fuels.
- Exempts permitted commercial and industrial boilers.
- Reopens the sole-source registry from February 2, 2015 until June 1, 2015.
-
Exempts sources located above 7,000 feet.
This final rule amendment clarifies changes to the existing rule and is a separate amendment from the proposed seasonal wood burn ban amendment mentioned above.
