Shaming & Shunning, Part II 'You Must Be a Rightwing Nut-job' by Michael Rectenwald | 30 Aug 2017 | One of the many difficulties that attends a mass attack by hordes of cyber-critics is getting around to answering them. Flashback: The Red Cross's Secret Disaster | 29 Oct 2014 | The Red Cross botched key elements of its mission after Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Isaac, leaving behind a trail of unmet needs and acrimony, according to an investigation by ProPublica and NPR...What's more, Red Cross officials at national headquarters in Washington, D.C. compounded the Red Cross's inability to provide relief by "diverting assets for public relations purposes," as one internal report puts it. Distribution of relief supplies, the report said, was "politically driven." During Isaac, Red Cross supervisors ordered dozens of trucks usually deployed to deliver aid to be driven around nearly empty instead, "just to be seen," one of the drivers, Jim Dunham, recalls. "We were sent way down on the Gulf with nothing to give," Dunham says. The Red Cross's relief effort was "worse than the storm."
Tropical Storm Irma forms in Atlantic, expected to strengthen into hurricane | 30 Aug 2017 | A tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic Ocean strengthened into a tropical storm Wednesday morning and has been officially named Irma. As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, Irma was carrying maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and was located about 420 miles west of the Cabo Verde islands in the far eastern Atlantic. Irma is moving at a pace of 13 mph and its tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles from its center. Warm ocean temperatures in the tropical Atlantic could help the storm strengthen, according to a report by the Miami Herald.
