It’s Not Over Yet: Republicans are Leading in These House Races

Nearly a month after Election Day and multiple elections have yet to be finalized. Democrat leaders have proudly claimed they would succeed in not only maintaining control of the House but would also manage to flip a record number of Republican seats. Despite the fact Democrats touted claims the blue tsunami would carry them to landslide victories, all eight of these House races have Republicans in the lead.

California’s 21st Congressional District

California Republican David Valadao is currently leading against Democrat incumbent TJ Cox. According to the California Secretary of State, Valadao holds a 1,820 vote lead over Cox. Due to a number of votes needing ballot signature corrections the Fresno County Registrar expects to have the vote count certified by Friday.

Though some votes remain uncounted, Republican incumbent Mike Garcia has claimed victory over Democrat challenger Christy Smith. The district north of Los Angeles is a battleground district won over by Democrats two years ago. In a statement, Rep. Garcia said, “victory is clear” and congratulated Smith on a hard-fought campaign, yet the Associated Press has not declared a winner.

Republican Mike Garcia: 50.06%

Democrat Christy Smith: 49.94%

Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District

In the tightest race for a Congressional seat, Republican Marianette Miller-Meeks’ lead shrank to single digits last week as the tense recount winds down. Reportedly, Miller-Meeks held a razor-thin lead of only eight votes over Democrat Rita Hart out nearly 400,000 votes cast. Nearly all recount boards in the district have reported their results and Miller-Meeks is expected to be the certified winner. The Republican will be the second representative to flip a congressional seat in Iowa for the GOP.

Republican incumbent Lee Zeldin has already claimed victory over Democrat challenger Nancy Goroff. Rep. Zeldin has served in the House since 2014 representing New York’s 1st Congressional District. Democrats were hoping to flip the seat but Rep. Zeldin was easily able to defeat Goroff

New York’s 2nd Congressional District

In a race to fill the seat left by retiring Representative Peter King, the Republican state assemblyman Andrew Garbarino declared victory over Democrat Jackie Gordon. With nearly 84% of votes reported, Gordon ultimately conceded the race to Garbarino who will keep the Long Island seat in Republican control despite the push from Democrats to flip the seat.

New York’s 22nd Congressional District

Although Democrat incumbent Rep. Anthony Brindisi is set to be defeated by Republican Claudia Tenney a New York judge ordered a hold on certifying the results. According to the Associated Press, a state supreme court judge issued an injunction barring the eight counties in New York’s 11th district from certifying the election results.

Democrat incumbent Max Rose had no choice but to concede to Republican challenger Nicole Malliotakis after she took a 16-point lead over the representative. After a hard-fought race for NY’s 11th district to represent Staten Island and south Brooklyn Malliotakis will be the only Republican Congresswoman to represent New York City,

New York’s 24th Congressional District

Republican incumbent John Katko will continue to represent New York’s 24th district despite Democrat challenger Dana Balter’s best efforts to flip the seat. As absentee ballots continued to be counted it was clear that Balter had no chance of recovering a lead over Rep. Katko causing her to concede the race.
