After Democrats Take Control Of The Senate – They Lay Out Their Plans For Stimulus Checks And The DREAM Act
Ben Dutka
After the Georgia runoff elections, Democrats have secured their slight majority lead in the Senate. Candidates Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff defeated Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue.
And now that the left has apparent control of the presidency, House, and Senate, they’re in a position to push through a variety of progressive policies.
They’re not wasting any time, either.
Democrats are champing at the bit to get their policies enacted, especially after several years of being stymied by Republicans like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
So, it seems they want to make up for lost time — they’re already talking about making a series of moves that will probably earn them plenty of support from liberals around the country.
However, these ideas will also rile up Republicans and Conservatives, who are still feeling the sting of yesterday’s losses.
This list of progressive plans won’t make them feel much better, either. As The Blaze summarized, here are some of the Democrat top priorities:
Stimulus Checks: House Democrats and President Donald Trump supported the $2,000 checks, but it was halted by Republicans. Now it appears the $2k checks will become a reality.
The Equality Act: “The Equality Act would provide consistent and explicit anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people across key areas of life, including employment, housing, credit, education, public spaces and services, federally funded programs, and jury service.”
But it doesn’t end there.
Democrats will also renew their support of “Dreamers” and attempt to pass a bill that has failed nearly a dozen times in the last 20 years.
This is The DREAM Act, and it supposedly offers a “pathway to legal status for undocumented youth who came to this country as children,” according to the American Immigration Council.
Next up, don’t be surprised if they start pushing for construction to stop on the southern border wall.
But lastly, Democrats want to start thinking about the country’s infrastructure, which includes giving states and local governments more funding (this could refer to more pandemic aid).
For the time being, we’re not sure if the latter point – or any of the current ideas – are part of the progressive Green New Deal.
Still, given the situation, we’d expect leaders like Nancy Pelosi and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to renew their push to get that Deal through, despite plenty of opposition in Washington D.C.
Key Takeaways:
- After gaining control of the Senate, Democrats unveiled a shortlist of policies they intend to push through as quickly as possible.
- Several of the ideas faced opposition from Republicans in years past. But Democrats appear to have a clear path to approval now.
- Included are the $2,000 stimulus checks, an “Equality Act,” and the controversial “DREAM Act.”
