Law-enforcement officials in the “sanctuary” state of California ignored requests from ICE to pick up an illegal alien before he attempted to kill a sheriff’s deputy this week.
Javier Hernandez-Morales was caught on body camera footage trying to kill Napa County Sheriff’s Deputy Riley Jarecki on Sunday, the Washington Times reported.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said they had lodged four separate “detainer” requests asking that Hernandez-Morales be held for pickup while in local jails, the Times said.
The illegal alien ended up back on the streets.
ICE said in a statement the incident “may have been prevented if ICE had been notified about any of the multiple times Hernandez-Morales was released from local custody over the last few years.”
“This is an impactful, scary example of how public safety is affected by laws or policies limiting local law enforcement agencies’ ability to cooperate with ICE,” the agency said.
Hernandez-Morales was killed by the deputy in a shootout.
ICE said he had been deported twice in 2007 and once in 2010. Federal officials tried to deport him in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
The Times said Napa County officials told local media they are trying to get more information.
The officials suggested to an ABC television affiliate that they were hindered by the illegal alien’s use of aliases.
