former speaker of the house newt gingrich is interviewed on fox & friends.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi will likely win her re-election bid as speaker, even as opposition from fellow party members mounts against her, another former speaker, Newt Gingrich, said Friday, while agreeing with a TV host's question that presiding over Democrats could be like "herding cats."

"(You're) having some wildcats as well as regular cats," Gingrich told Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

"You have left wing cats and common sense cats and then you have older cats who wonder why the younger cats are making so much noise."

But at the end of the day, Pelosi is "very smart" and "very tough," and she has raised an"immense amount of money" for the Democratic party and candidates, Gingrich said. However, he added, she'll have to engage in negotiations to get that vote.

If elected, Pelosi will have to work with Democrats to bring them into a position as one that is about something other than obstruction heading into the 2020 presidential race, said Gingrich.

"Unless they really want to go into the election in 2020 as the party of obstruction, you are going to see some things pass and it may turn out to be more productive than people think," said Gingrich.

Gingrich noted that when Republicans took over and he became speaker in 1995, "we reformed Medicare, cut the capital gains tax, balanced the federal budget for four straight years."

He also warned that calls from some Democrats to subpoena the White House and begin investigations could backfire, as "the American people want to see you get something done."
