Gun massacres take place nearly every weekend in Chicago, Obama's hometown with ultra-strict gun control
J.D. Heyes
(NaturalNews) Following the most recent mass murder at a small community college in Oregon (where a crazed gunman seeking notoriety shot and killed nine people in a classroom), President Obama did not hesitate to take to the cameras to do what he always does following such incidents — lecture the country about "gun control" and "sensible gun laws" he claims would prevent more shootings like that in the future.
"And each time this happens I'm going to bring this up," Obama said, full-on politicizing the incident. "Each time this happens I am going to say that we can actually do something about it, but we're going to have to change our laws. And this is not something I can do by myself. I've got to have a Congress and I've got to have state legislatures and governors who are willing to work with me on this."
But the president isn't stopping with another lecture. To politicize the point even further, he's making a trip — on the taxpayer's dime, of course — all the way to that small Oregon community from Washington, D.C., to milk it for every political ounce he can, even if his presence is not wanted and his "more gun control" stance is widely rejected by residents.
This president has an anti-gun message to spread, you see, and he's not about to be denied.
Welcome to Chicagoland
If only our president were as concerned about all shootings as he is about this shooting, and other high-profile mass murders that have occurred with remarkable frequency on his watch, then we probably could have arrived at a better solution than what we currently have.
Because if he were equally offended by mass shootings and murder no matter where they occurred, he would be lecturing the country daily — perhaps hourly — given all the gun-related carnage in his own hometown of Chicago.
As reported by The Daily Caller, someone has been shot in the Windy City every 2.84 hours — based on a total of 2,349 shootings — from January 1 to October 6, 2015, according to crime statistics maintained by the Chicago Tribune.
At the current rate, the number of shooting deaths in Chicago is expected to surpass the (high) 2014 total of 2,587 victims (where someone was shot every 3.38 hours). For comparison, there have only been 2,370 deaths of American military personnel in Afghanistan since the war there began in October 2001 (still too many, but you get the idea), according to a casualty-tracking website.
"A gun-free zone"
And yet, Chicago remains to be one of the most heavily regulated cities when it comes to gun control. Concealed carry permits are almost nonexistent, as The DC noted. If you want to buy a gun or ammunition in the entire state of Illinois (which is largely rural, mind you, but ruled by liberals who populate its cities), you'll first need to obtain a Firearms Owners Identification card (so the state can track your purchases). In the Windy City, you'll also need to comply with another tracking regulation; you'll need to get a Chicago Firearm Permit, which of course isn't free.
The DC further reported:
"Not only are the people heavily regulated in Chicago, but guns are also heavily regulated. Any long gun with a grip protruding from the stock or a firearm with a telescoping stock is prohibited and classified as an 'assault weapon.'
"Magazines are limited to a 12-round capacity."
Police, of course, are exempt from these requirements.
Gun regulations are so absurd in Illinois that even spring-powered pellet guns — if they have a muzzle velocity of more than 700 feet-per-second — are classified as "firearms," even though they don't use any gunpowder (the ingredient that puts "fire" in "firearm").
You cannot even carry a stun gun for self-defense because the nanny state lawmakers and bureaucracy have deemed those "deadly weapons."
So Chicago, for all intents and purposes, is essentially a massive "gun-free zone," with the exception of those who regularly violate gun laws (and how familiar does that sound?).
Which brings us full-circle back to Obama, who enthusiastically lectures about all manners of gun crime, except for those that continue to be the most problematic and obvious — the regular, hourly shootings in his own hometown.
It's no wonder fewer and fewer Americans take him seriously on the issue.
