reservists deployed to Iraq, is all-too-common. This editor witnessed one such funeral yesterday in a small northern California town with a population of just under 200.

The small town of Mendocino, a vibrant anti-Bush community, buried the first military casualty from the Iraq war in 2003.

According to a California National Guard source, the reported military deaths in Iraq are of those who are killed on the ground in Iraq. If someone is wounded and a medevac helicopter is called in, if that person dies, even moments after the doors of the chopper are closed, the death is not counted as a KIA, or "killed in action."

Similarly, if a military member dies of his or her wounds in a military hospital abroad or stateside, the death is not counted as KIA. Therefore, the actual numbers of military deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan are being severely undercounted by the Pentagon. The Pentagon is more concerned with perception management than in truth telling.
