Big Pharma and the FDA: Suppress the Science, Ban the Natural Substances, Sell the Drugs!
Earlier this year the FDA agreed to ban companies from selling pyridoxamine as a dietary supplement, even though it is a common, naturally occurring substance that has always been available in foods such as chicken and brewer’s yeast. They have tried to ban scientific information on the health benefits of tart cherries, the cholesterol-lowering benefits of Cheerios, and health claims about the benefits of fish oil for heart, cancer, depression, body pain.
FDA Seeks Your Suggestions for Increased Transparency
New FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg has established a Transparency Task Force, and has called for public comment. Its purpose is to make recommendations on how the agency can release more information in such areas as drug evaluation and enforcement matters. She wants a report in six months. Openness in government is imperative, and prompt disclosure to the public of government activity ensures legitimacy and accountability. Will you let your voice be heard?
Congressional Panel Wants New Review of BPA SafetyA congressional committee is investigating whether the FDA gave undue influence to chemical makers after the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal revealed how government regulators relied heavily on industry lobbyists when considering the safety of the chemical bisphenol A (BPA), and broke the news that lobbyists met last week at an exclusive club in Washington to hammer out a public relations strategy to sell the benefits of BPA to the American public, including "befriending people that are able to manipulate the legislative process."

The CNS designation is applicable in a variety of professional settings, including but not limited to: hospital or clinic-based nutrition support, laboratory or field research, individual and group counseling, classroom teaching, commercial development of new nutritional products, authorship and public policy development.
