Adriana, We understand that you are a dedicated warrior for the Pro-Life cause and a champion for saving the lives of our precious unborn babies from the horror of abortion. So I think you will be pleased to know that just this past year AMERICANS UNITED FOR LIFE (AUL) won a landmark victory in the Supreme Court against the state of California that protects the free speech and freedom of religion rights of Pro-Life Americans.
I'll tell you more about this amazing landmark victory in a moment. My name is Catherine Glenn Foster. I am a Pro-Life attorney. I am also President and CEO of AMERICANS UNITED FOR LIFE. AUL's legal team has been involved in every abortion-related case before the U.S. Supreme Court since Roe v. Wade in 1973 -- thirty cases that have made it to the Supreme Court and dozens more in America's lower federal courts. We also draft model legislation designed by our Constitutional law and legal experts to survive federal and Supreme Court challenges. AUL crafts this model Pro-Life legislation for states and Congress to act on -- legislation designed to survive legal challenges to the Supreme Court. Just since 2011, state legislatures have passed almost 500 Pro-Life laws, most of them modeled after legislation crafted by AUL's legal team. These laws include . . .
Our legal team then works with Pro-Life states to defend these state laws in the courts. And, of course, all these laws are being challenged in the courts by Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry. So we write model laws designed to survive court challenges. Then our legal team defends these laws when challenged in the courts. AUL is the only Pro-Life organization doing this work. AUL's legal team is actively fighting these court battles -- all the way to the Supreme Court. That's what we do -- and have been doing since 1971. AUL is the abortion industry's worst nightmare. As I mentioned, just this past year, we had a major victory in the Supreme Court that protects free speech and freedom of religion rights of Pro-Life Americans. In 2015, California passed a law it called the "Reproductive FACT Act" that required Christian Pro-Life pregnancy centers to post notices and to inform pregnant women who visit these Pro-Life centers that the state of California offers free abortions. This law even required Pro-Life pregnancy centers to provide the phone number and address of the nearest location where a pregnant woman could get a free abortion, paid for by taxpayers! Our legal team at AMERICANS UNITED FOR LIFE immediately swung into action and helped take this case all the way to the Supreme Court -- where the Justices ruled (in a 5-4 decision) that the state of California cannot force Pro-Life doctors and health providers to advertise and promote abortion.
This ruling will help us overturn similar pro-abortion laws other states have adopted or threatened to adopt. And now we're back in the Supreme Court again on another key case -- to defend the legal right of states to block Planned Parenthood from having access to Medicaid block grant funds. In all, Planned Parenthood receives more than $543 MILLION from the U.S. government (taxpayer money), much of it through Medicaid block grants to the states. Planned Parenthood is America's #1 abortion business -- committing upwards of 320,000 abortions per year at its abortion mills. Planned Parenthood also has a gruesome baby organ and body parts harvesting business, where the organs (such as beating hearts, livers, lungs, eyes and other vital organs) are cut out of the baby during a late-term abortion or even just after a live baby is born. The baby's organs are then sold to the highest bidder. Planned Parenthood's baby organ harvesting operation is a multi-million-dollar business. The babies in a later abortion feel unimaginable pain as their bodies are torn apart by the abortionist's scalpels, scissors and tools during the extraction of the baby's organs. This baby organ harvesting business is a big reason over a dozen states so far have chosen to block Planned Parenthood from receiving access to Medicaid funds because they don't want Medicaid funds (taxpayer funds) to be used for abortion, or for Planned Parenthood's baby torture and organ harvesting business, or for the tens of millions of dollars Planned Parenthood spends every election season to elect pro-abortion candidates and defeat Pro-Life candidates. Planned Parenthood's lawyers have challenged the right of states to block Planned Parenthood from having access to Medicaid block grant funds.
Now, our case before the Supreme Court could result in the ending of hundreds of millions of dollars of yearly taxpayer-funding for Planned Parenthood IF we prevail because at least a dozen states are poised to block Planned Parenthood from getting any of the Medicaid funds allocated to these states. But these federal court cases are very costly -- especially when we reach the Supreme Court level. This really is like David vs. Goliath because Planned Parenthood has an annual budget of $1.2 BILLION and an enormous legal department with dozens of attorneys. Half of Planned Parenthood's annual budget is supplied by taxpayers -- more than $543 MILLION per year. If we can block Planned Parenthood's access to Medicaid block grant money at the state level, this could cost Planned Parenthood hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars each year and save the lives of untold numbers of babies. This would also put a big dent in Planned Parenthood's election war chest. Every election season, Planned Parenthood spends tens of millions of dollars on attack ads against Pro-Life elected officials and candidates. In fact, Planned Parenthood is arguably the radical anti-Christian Left's most powerful political lobby -- with a $1.2 BILLION annual budget, almost half of it funded by taxpayers (by you).
Of course, Planned Parenthood will tell you it does not use taxpayer money to pay for abortions or its massive advertising campaigns to defeat Pro-Life candidates. But, as I'm sure you know, money is fungible. Your taxpayer money helps pay Planned Parenthood's overhead -- its rent and buildings, salaries, phones, utilities, etc. So the more we can cut off Planned Parenthood's access to taxpayer money, the more damage we can do to Planned Parenthood's abortion business, and the more lives of babies we can save. Also, the more we can cut off a major source of funding for the anti-Christian Left's political advertising campaigns. Not only is Planned Parenthood America's biggest abortion business (committing upwards of 320,000 abortions every year), but Planned Parenthood is America's #1 promoter of abortion. Most public schools use sex-ed curricula written and designed by Planned Parenthood, which promotes promiscuity for children as young as kindergarten. Planned Parenthood truly is an evil organization in every way. That's why it's so important we win this case in the Supreme Court -- so states can exercise their right to block Planned Parenthood from getting millions of dollars in Medicaid block grant money. AMERICANS UNITED FOR LIFE urgently needs donations to help us fight and win this battle in the Supreme Court, as well as to keep our other crucial Pro-Life legal cases moving forward in lower federal courts.
Many, if not most, of these cases are likely to end up in the Supreme Court as well. Since 2018, we have been in the Supreme Court on two cases. As you might imagine, these Supreme Court and federal court battles are enormously costly. Our bank account is depleted because our legal work and caseload has been especially heavy. Most of our wonderful supporters send donations in the $25 to $100 range to support our Pro-Life lawsuits and legal work. Though some of our wonderful friends are blessed to be able to send larger gifts of $500, $1,000 or even more, our other dear friends are making an equal sacrifice by sending smaller gifts of $20, $15 or even just $10. Only you know what you are able to contribute. Every dollar we can raise helps. Every court battle, every Supreme Court battle we fight is costly -- typically a cost of $250,000 per case. This case, now in the Supreme Court, is no different. The only way we can fight and win these battles is with donations from wonderful Pro-Life Americans, like you. Please help!
Sincerely, Catherine Glenn Foster, M.A., J.D. President & CEO of AMERICANS UNITED FOR LIFE P.S. It's unusual for AMERICANS UNITED FOR LIFE to be involved in two major Supreme Court legal battles in consecutive years. We're also working on numerous cases in lower federal courts that could end up before the Supreme Court. These legal battles have stretched AUL's resources to the breaking point. There's no other way to say it: Our bank account is down to its final few dollars. What a shame it would be if we were forced to scale back our efforts due to being out of funds -- especially as we enter the final stage of this crucial Supreme Court fight. Nor do I want to scale back our efforts in our cases in the lower federal courts . . . because these cases will likely be in the Supreme Court in the coming years. AUL has been chipping away at the Supreme Court's catastrophic Roe v. Wade ruling in 1973 that overturned Pro-Life laws in all 50 states and resulted in the deaths of 60 MILLION unborn babies in their mother's womb. We chip away at Roe v. Wade by crafting model legislation and working with the states to enact the hundreds of laws that now protect both women and their precious unborn children -- laws that have ENDED late-term abortions in the 18 states that ban abortions after 20 weeks and many other laws all aimed at real healthcare, not propping up the abortion industry with our taxpayer dollars. We then defend these laws in the courts -- all the way to the Supreme Court. We've been doing this since 1971. If you look at some of the supporting materials I've enclosed, you'll see why AMERICANS UNITED FOR LIFE is the abortion industry's worst nightmare. Now we're back in the Supreme Court again for another landmark legal battle aimed at shutting off millions of dollars in taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood. We can't win this battle without funds, without resources. These legal fights are costly. We operate on a shoestring budget. The reality is, we are always down to our last few dollars in the bank. Please contribute what you can.
