Why This Is Important

On November 30th the Supreme Court of Belarus sentenced my son Uladzislau Kavalyou (Vladislav Kovalev) and another young man Dzmitry Kanavalau (Dmitry Konovalov) to death.

Kanavalau was convicted in organizing the terrorist attacks in 2005 in Vitebsk, in 2008 in Minsk, and in the subway of Minsk in April 2011. My son Uladzislau was convicted of aiding.

The accusations are based on the statements made by these two young men, which, as many believe, were given under physical and emotional pressure. None of what has been said in court is supported by any evidence. My son insists he had not been involved in the terrorist attack and suggested Dzmitry Kanavalau has no relation to them either.

I believe that my son is innocent.

So do victims of the attack and many international human rights organizations:

- The victims of the attack have a number of questions regarding the impartiality and transparency of the trial and access to the case materials. Aliaksandr Kruty, a representative of one of the injured from the April attack Inesa Krutaya, made a motion to abolish the death penalty and asked the court to defer consideration of the case. A few days later - on September 20th - he was arrested and sent to a mental hospital allegedly for hooliganism. None of their motions were considered by the court;

- The defendants claimed that they were exposed to torture during the investigation to extract confessions.

- During the trial, independent journalists were banned from communicating with victims. The official media already refer to Kavalyou and Kanavalau as terrorists without awaiting the decision of the court.

With this petition, I am turning to you asking one single thing: I am asking you not to kill my son Uladzislau Kavalyou and Dzmitry Kanavalau, but instead to find those who are actually responsible for these terrorist crimes.

At the moment Belarus is the only country in Europe, which continues to execute death sentences. And while these two men being murdered, those who are responsible for the attacks are walking freely.

ПОЖАЛУЙСТА, ПОМОГИТЕ СПАСТИ МОЕГО СЫНА ОТ СМЕРТНОЙ КАЗНИ!

30 ноября Верховный суд Беларуси приговорил к смертной казни моего сына Владислава Ковалева и еще одного молодого человека, Дмитрия Коновалова.

Суд признал Коновалова Дмитрий виновным в организации терактов 2005г в Витебске, на День Независимости в Минске в 2008г. и в метро Минска в апреле 2011 года. Моего сына, Владислава Ковалёва, суд признал виновным в соучастии и недонесении.

Все обвинения основываются на признательных показаниях, данных на предварительном следствии под давлением, от которых Владислав Ковалёв отказался на суде. Больше никаких веских доказательств обвинение не предоставило -- всё построено на домыслах и доводах.

Мой сын Владислав утверждает, что Дмитрий Коновалов также не имеет никакого отношения к этому делу.

Я знаю, что мой сын невиновен. Так же считают люди, пострадавшие от теракта, которые присутствовали на суде, и международные организации защите прав человека:

- Мой сын Владислав Ковалев и Дмитрий Коновалов утверждают, что они подвергались пыткам во время следствия для получения признательных показаний.

- Пострадавших от теракта волнуют вопросы, касающихся беспристрастности и прозрачности судебного процесса, доступа к материалам дела. Так Александр Крутой, представитель Инессы Крутой, одной из пострадавших от взрыва 11 апреля, подал ходатайство об отмене смертной казни и просил суд отложить рассмотрение дела до принятия решения по этому ходатайству. Однако суд отклонял все ходатайства, заявленные пострадавшими.

- В ходе судебного разбирательства независимым журналистам было запрещено общаться с пострадавшими. Не дожидаясь решения суда, официальные СМИ уже указывает на Ковалева и Коновалова как террористов.

Я обращаюсь с этой петицией к вам с одной лишь просьбой: я прошу вас помочь не убить моего сына, Владислава Ковалева, и его знакомого, Дмитрия Коновалова, а вместо этого потребовать найти тех, кто действительно должен нести ответственность за совершенные преступления.

На данный момент Беларусь - единственная страна в Европе, в которой существует смертная казнь. И пока мальчишки сидят за решеткой, те, кто организовал теракт ходят на свободе.
