URGENT: Stop this sneak attack on the Arctic Refuge!
Jamie Rappoport Clark, Defenders of Wildlife
America’s most iconic national wildlife refuge could be turned into a huge oil and gas industrial complex if special interests in Congress get their way.
This week, the Senate and House will consider and likely approve their versions of our nation’s annual budget – but anti-wildlife Senators have an agenda: they are expected to propose an amendment leading to oil and gas drilling in the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
The Arctic Refuge is the crown jewel of the National Wildlife Refuge System. Its coastal plain contains the most important onshore denning habitat for polar bears in the United States. It hosts the annual migration from Canada of the Porcupine caribou herd — one of the longest overland mammal migrations in the world. Brown bears, wolves, muskoxen, arctic foxes, wolverines are just a few of the other wild animals that live in this magnificent wild land.
But the coastal plain of the Refuge has also been the target of oil companies and others who would plunder this unique and fragile land, causing irreparable harm.
In addition to the Arctic Refuge, other anti-wildlife provisions are expected to be launched by the budget resolution as well. These include a measure to authorize a wasteful and destructive road through Alaska’s Izembek National Wildlife Refuge and provisions to dramatically weaken and undermine the Endangered Species Act.
Big Oil Targets
Arctic Refuge!
Many, including oil companies,
want to plunder this unique and fragile land.
Help protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge!
Sincerely,
