Rioters Turn Manhattan Into Chaos Island

NEW YORK — So, how was your weekend?

I spent Saturday and Sunday evenings in a balcony seat for the mayhem staged by Antifa and other violent, far-Left radicals. My Manhattan neighborhood, the northwest East Village, just below Union Square, was Ground Zero for a weekend that featured some loud but peaceful protest, more helicopter sounds than the opening sequence of Apocalypse Now, and stomach-turning scenes of true bedlam and destruction.

Saturday night involved the torching of an NYPD van right around the corner from my apartment. As it burned, thick, black smoke filled East 13th Street, wafted across Fourth Avenue, and then drifted into my home — a truly frightful and lung-coarsening event. This was one of at least five such police vehicles ruined by criminals, including one for the NYPD’s Homeless Outreach Unit. How compassionate.

Sunday night offered the enraging, chilling sight of young hoodlums trashing another NYPD van, this time on Fourth Avenue, directly beneath my terrace. While the van stood empty, three thugs turned it into a trampoline, jumping up and down on its roof. Several other savages smashed the windows with skateboards, a kick scooter, and long, steel sticks. Another punk with a paint can sprayed “SMD” across the van’s hood. This could mean numerous things, but my money is on a term for soliciting fellatio.

Sunday evening also brought yet another blaze, this time on East 12th Street. This one seemed smaller than Saturday’s — more smoke than fire. As fumes filled Fourth Avenue, cinders ascended into the starry sky. From a campfire, they would have been delightful. From a site of urban chaos, they could not have been more menacing.

Alas, such pandemonium raged well beyond my block. In SoHo, looters picked stores clean, like hyenas eating zebras. Retail windows from Midtown to Brooklyn to the Bronx were shattered in an eerie echo of Kristallnacht. And, of course, such hate-fueled madness repeated itself, from Philadelphia (where America was born) to Washington, D.C. (where the Great Emancipator’s Lincoln Memorial and the anti-fascist World War II Memorial were defaced) to Santa Monica (where socialism meets the sea, and voracious mobs inflicted their own 100-percent-off sale).

Rarely heard amid all of this devastation: The name George Floyd.
