AUTUMN
Rocky Montana
The months between Summer and Winter is a wondrous time, like an old friend who comes to visit and dine.
Autumn is a time of transformation of fauna and flora in preparation for cold months ahead; a time for goose and gander to migrate south, overhead.
With Autumn comes a welcoming temperature drop, chilly winds and cool rainy days; then Indian Summer, longer nights and a still gossamer haze.
I long to walk in the woods and experince the changing nature of trees; to hear the growing stillness that this change in season brings.
Golden leaves of Aspen, Oak, Sycamore and Buckeye; I marvel as they shimmer bright against a clear Autumn blue sky.
Leaves flash in the sunlight and dance on the breeze, turning from green to yellow, orange, red and brown; then detach and float silently to the ground.
I love the cool brisk wind upon my face, the sweet fragrance of Spruce on the breeze; the sound of a woodpecker at work, the sight of squirrels collecting acorns among the trees.
With Autumn comes the farmer's harvest, cutting firewood and hearing the wind blow; the turning back the clock, the smell of burning leaves and the splendor of the year's first frost and snow.
It is a time for a renewed focus of attention, raking piles of leaves and the laughter of children at play; for a drive in the country and being with family and friends on Thanksgiving Day.
Glowing embers, crackling logs and sparks dancing on the fire; roasting marshmellows, signing songs and drinking hot apple cider.
As nature takes a pause after Summer's bustling activity, I thank this colorful time of year for its wondrous variety
